While ornamental gardens perform functions, (frame a small space or punctuate expansive estates), they largely create mood or atmosphere. We may be comforted by the lightness and movement of ornamental grasses or by the order and symmetry of repeated patterns.

DESIGN/Ornamental Gardens

All art is subjective. Garden style—be it looser and less controlled, or geometric, linear and pruned—is a matter of preference. And for many, a matter of emotional response.  Romantic drifts of ornamental grasses. Hedges, clipped and symmetrical. Informal, formal. Whatever style, evokes a memory, a feeling.

It isn’t that I don’t like sweet disorder, but it has to be judiciously arranged.
